going green activites/events for highschool

I am just wondering if anyone has some interesting and fun ideas for activities or events or anything along that line that could promote “going/thinking green” within a highschool? I am from a small school, around 450 students in total grades 5-12, and I am the social convenor and public relations officer on my highschool’s student union. I have been thinking about holding some sort of event or “spirit week” activity that would help get the message of going green out to fellow students. My only main problem: small school = small school spirit. It’s pretty hard to get active involvement in many of the events the student union plans. But any helpful suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!=)

Maybe we should get Jack Johnson to come to our schools, that might be a little fun. haha hm… fun activities, well at my school we just plated about 20 new trees with like 20 other new bushes. So that might be a fun thing for you to do. Its tough cause kids don’t wanna listen, accept for the awesome kids like us, and they just ignore everything thinking that it will be solved. sorry if I didnt help you out which im pretty sure I didnt, good luck though.

Hi there! I recently started a Green Team at my office, and am planning to start one at my kids’ school next year. I got tired of waiting for others to start something. I am glad to hear that you are doing something at your high school. Here is what we did at my work, maybe you can use some of these ideas:

Held extravaganza centered around promoting local companies, recycling, and environmental awareness with following activities:
- Electronics waste recycling - filled pick up truck with workable and non-workable electronics (workable items were donated to Goodwill, and non-workable taken to responsible e-waste recycling facility)
- Shoe recycling to donate to Soles4Souls (http://www.soles4souls.org/)
- Posted eco-challenges (such as replace 5 incandescent bulbs with CFL, go to farmer’s market this month, don’t eat meat 2 days/wk)
- Sign-up sheet for Green Team
- Green Trivia game
- points awarded for every recycling item brought, for every challenge signed up for, for every trivia item won
- Prizes donated from local eco-companies awarded to people with most points

It was a lot of fun and a big success! Hopefully this gave you some ideas!

This is what I am going to do next year at my school
Follow Jack Johnson’s example and have a Village Green at your football games.
