My husband and I have already begun to build our own urban homestead and hopefully in the near future will move further out into the woods so we can be totally self reliant. We would love to have a group of people to do it with but have found it difficult to get everyone on the same page at the same time. People in modern society are just too selfish and are too spoiled with modren conviences.
In 2001 we retired from our 9-5’s and began to raise & grow our own food. Which is much more work then our regular jobs ever required. Adding solar Hot H2O, weatherizing, changing all lightbulbs, only purchacing Energy Star Appliances,composting,recycling,storing rain H2O,the list goes on and on.  We’ve gone green and cut back everywhere we could without leaving our 1 acer in town. The Pac. N.W. is a beautiful area but land prices are high and there many restrictions due to dense population. Have you looked into moving South? Perhaps ,S.W Missouri or Arkansas (the Ozarks region) it has great weather, perfect soil, and cheep land with few restrictions. Taxes are super low in this part of the country also.
When your looking for land don’t forget about the property taxes. You can’t get away from them. You will be taxed on all your farm equiptment and livestock by the Fed’s and State, possiably the County depending where you choose to live. Choose your location wisley.
